It was inevitable that the merchandise gods would finally give in to us mortals and come out with cat-themed cat stuff, things with cat prints, things that celebrate all things cat, following the popularity of felines online.
The last quarter of 2016 saw Havaianas and Ipanema churning out flip-flops with cat prints.
Local flip-flop brands Banana Peel and teen sibling Nutmeg are way ahead of them. They have long been pleasing cat lovers like me with flip-fluffs with cat designs. From cat prints to cat pins. If you are a fan of cats living in the Philippines, you should always check their racks in department stores and their stand alone stores. Stalk their online accounts. Banana Peel has a mainstay yet evolving Hello Kitty collection, has offered a cat-themed flip-flop collection dubbed Catastrophe and as I have mentioned, has an occasional cat printed flip-flop wandering at their displays.
Last year, Nutmeg amped the cat, I mean, cute factor by coming out with Pet Play, a collection of flip-flops with cat and dog prints. I went crazy. Well, crazier than usual. The foot beds were soft like a cat's belly, the slippers themselves light as cat fur. You're not going to end up with rashes, blisters or callouses from long walks with these babies. But are you willing to put your feet on them cute faces?
A cat addict would be tempted to keep the slippurrs with all her other cat stuff. However, given the P110 price point, the obvious solution would be to purchase 2 pairs for each cat design, a pair to keep, another to slink around in. You would never get to do that if you were to go for the imported brands given their hefty price tags. Slink maybe but not collect all the designs and get two of each at that.
Unfortunately, there's only one pair from this collection left at the store near our place last time I checked. There are lots of stock for two designs from Banana Peel though, a pink one with the quote "keep calm and just pet a cat" and a white one proclaiming "id spend all nine lives with you." Both have cat prints. I'm beginning to suspect that there are lots of cat lovers in my area. I saw one recently at the stationery section acting like me while inspecting a cat printed purse. That's okay. Supply and demand. That means more merch for cat lovers coming our way.
